The top ten communities are chosen by an in-house panel, which makes their selections based on community spirit, originality and passion for hockey. The top five communities are determined by audience vote. Once the top five are revealed, voters are re-invited to vote for the Grand Prize Community.

Hearst's Kraft Hockeyville 2009 campaign committee holds a pep rally at the Knights of Columbus community centre January 14, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. during CBC's televised hockey game announcing the top 10 candidate communites.
